"Get the outside-linebackers wider," Mark Collier screamed into my headset. "They are just going to throw it out in the flat to one of the backs and we don't have anyone out there."

The thoughts were bouncing around in my head and I was doing my best to gain control of the situation. Our football team had just driven eighty yards to take the lead in our Central Buckeye League (CBL) championship game against the Dublin Shamrocks, and now the ‘Rocks were staging a last minute drive of their own to win the game. We were clinging precariously to a 26-22 lead after rallying from a 15-0 half-time deficit.

The fact that we were even in a championship game was a miracle, truly the work of God, as London High School had come out of nowhere to challenge for the championship for the first time in fifteen years. With 4:34 left in the game, we had scored to take the lead, and now we stood helplessly on the sidelines as we watched Dublin move steadily down the field. With thirty seconds left and Dublin on our eleven yard line, our first-ever CBL championship seemed to be in jeopardy.

Our sideline was frantic and Coach Collier was screaming in my ear as we tried to come up with a defensive scheme that would halt this last minute drive.

"Korns needs to be wider, and so does Curtis," Mark screamed over the phones.

I was praying, as I always did throughout a game, and the commotion only seemed to be breaking the flow of my spirit.

"Tighten Carl up. He's giving up too much ground," Mark yelled.

I knew that the play on the field was out of our hands. We had prepared the team and it was too late for adjustments to be made. Coach Collier's exhortations were distracting, and they were irritating my spirit.

"Mark, just shut up and pray," I blurted out to him over the hum of the crowd.

His reply still echoes in my head.

"I already am."
